teaching philosophy:

My teaching philosophy focuses two main points:

  • The goal of technique is to have the ability to healthfully execute creative ideas.

  • Effective practice strategies and self-assessment are essential for a student's success.

Throughout my own education I learned with perseverance the technical necessities to sing healthfully, which I believe is essential to expressive singing. Technique allows a singer to make the sounds they intend to make. Learning from unhealthy instincts I had as a young singer, I was dedicated to overcoming every technical problem I encountered. As a teaching assistant under Dr. John Seesholtz, I developed a pedagogical checklist for personal use that includes eight solutions for each obstacle, allowing me to tailor my approach to meet the unique needs of each student, who found success with different variations.

When teaching technique I focus heavily on releasing tension in the body to free up vocal production. When students make healthy, efficient sounds, it is important to me to ask them these questions: “What did you change to achieve that sound?” and “What does it feel like specifically, in comparison to what you were doing before?” I then use their own language to create a roadmap for the student  to achieve the outcome consistently. This back and forth questioning not only helps me teach effectively, but also teaches the students to teach themselves. At the end of the lesson, I ask each student to summarize what they learned and make a plan to incorporate new information in their practice for the week. Developing critical thinking and effective practice strategies is essential for success at any level.

Each voice and each personality has unique qualities. As students discover their physical voices, I encourage them to discover their personal artistic voices by developing a musical vocabulary to articulate their opinions and by delving into the interpretation of their pieces. The tools I mentioned, physical and metaphysical, must have the goal of expressing the students' individual creative voices in their work.

I would recommend Sabina to other singers because she is very dedicated to helping you grow as a singer! My technique has improved since working with Sabina because she provides specific tools and approaches on how to reach my goals. The feedback she provides is always very clear and helpful. The way she teaches has made it a lot easier for me to apply the technique I am working on into my repertoire!
